One of the most user friendly music file purchasing sites, Amazon utilizes the versatile .MP3 format which come DRM free. In layman terms that translates into total music freedom. Once you purchased a track, which is less than $1.00, you have total freedom to burn and transfer as much as you like. Sounds great right? Then why is it only my 5th choice? That’s because most record labels hate the idea of DRM free files, so that limits the track selection on Amazon substantially.
To download tracks individually, you will be able to do so just from the site but if you are looking to download an entire album you will have to download their application which does not take much effort.
The music selection is limited; finding exactly what you are looking for can be difficult. Although you can search by artist using the search box and filter just for artists. After you search for an artist, Amazon will present you with a list of artists with those keywords in their title.
All music downloaded from Amazon is DRM free. This means there are no secret tracking codes embedded in your music dictating how or where you can use it. This means you can transfer purchased tracks to CDs and most portable MP3 players like iPod, Creative Zen and Zune. Another good aspect that Amazon incorporates is that their system is compatible with all OS systems. So unless you are still running Windows 95, you can be a part of their digital music experience.
Their service presents you with a highly developed rating system based on the records of which CDs you've bought in the past to present you with pretty accurate MP3 album recommendations right off the bat. Anyway, if you consider the recommendation inaccurate, you can alter it at anytime by rating albums or checking boxes for "I own it" or "Not Interested".
Summary: Amazon is making great strides to take over the internet buying experience. Amazon does digital music right with its new DRM-free MP3 store, combining competitive pricing with an easy shopping experience and hassle-free listening. The music selection is limited. You can click "Preview all" to hear all the clips from an entire album—a nice little feature that iTunes doesn't offer. Making a purchase is as simple as clicking the Buy MP3 button, or, if you want the entire album, Buy MP3 Album with 1-Click.
