When Apple introduced iTunes and its popular accessory the iPod it revolutionized digital music and how we utilize it.
Perhaps a little hypocritical of Apple, they 'bundled' their music (DRM) downloads, just like Microsoft has done with its software, which has been the bane of their existence since Windows was created. So basically if you purchase a track from iTunes, you can only use it in iTunes or your iPod. That can be very frustrating for consumers who have gone out and purchased a different type of music device only to find out that the .M4P/.AAC format is exclusive to Apple products.
The best feature about iTunes comes from its enormous selection in music. There is over 6 million tracks/movies/TV shows available starting at $0.99/song. If only iTunes’s versatility between Mac and PC would spill over to their restricted digital rights management, they would make a killing! Although Apple is in negotiations with the music studios to open their file formats, their current selection of MP3 DRM free music is limited.
The iTunes jukebox ability to automatically convert music files to digital files anytime you put a CD into your computer. This built in file conversion option is a great add on to iTunes.
In case you want to catch up on you reading, get access to over 30,000 audio books online. Audio books cost a little bit more than individual songs, but you can get 90 second previews of any title before you make your purchase.
The iTunes Music Store service help and support are among the best in the industry.
Summary: The service works great, downloads fast and integrates with your iPod nicely. Unfortunately, iTunes has yet to offer a monthly subscription service like Napster To Go or Yahoo! Music Unlimited, so you're limited to buying tracks or albums a la carte. However, we can’t wait until the day all the music they offer can play on devices other than iPod.
